Children's dance examinations
At Dance Rhythms we encourage all children to take a medal test at least once a year, to help maintain a high standard throughout the school and to give each child a sense of achievement in dance.
Children love to collect medals and certificates and at Dance Rhythms they have that opportunity.
Children do not have the nerves we seem to gather as we become adults and relish in showing what they have learnt. However if a child is under-confident, or is not ready to take their exam, there is no pressure — they can always take it next time.
Children can take exams in many different styles as you can see from this list: Freestyle, Street, Cheerleading, Latin, Hip Hop, Ballroom, Tap, Drama and Line Dance.
Teachers hold the final decision on who is entered for a test. If its felt that a child is borderline, then he/she would be asked to wait until the next test date.
All the children's medal tests are taken with the United Kingdom Alliance (U.K.A.). Anthony and Susan are U.K.A. examiners themselves and understand completely the standard necessary for each grade. The U.K.A. have a very impressive range of medals, awards and certificates that children would be proud to win and take to school to show their teachers, or maybe into the assembly. Many children at Dance Rhythms do just that.
All children are taught how to introduce themselves to the examiner, commencing with a bow or curtsey, then announcing their name, age and grade. This is of such importance, that Dance Rhythms teach voice projection, poise and clear diction. All aspects are addressed helping the child to present themself with confidence. This surely will help them in life.
The U.K.A. have a special award system for the tiny dancers, called the Uni-Ted Club. They can also win prizes by collecting Uni-Ted dance badges and a plaque that they can fill up with dancing Uni-Teds. Each child also receives a certificate. The dance tests consist of simple routines in different styles. Children are taught co-ordination, rhythm, songs and actions, but most of all how to have fun with dance.
